What do bunnies have to do with Easter?

Have you ever wondered how the bunny ever came to be associated with Easter? I'm reminded of the movie - God Grew Tired Of Us - that we watched at 30 Hour Famine. One of the "Lost Boys" was wondering what Santa and a decorated tree had to do with the birth of Jesus Christ. The Easter bunny is the same - what does it have to do with the death and resurrection of Jesus? Well... check out this blog post from The Resurgence for a little history, and then come back here and share your thoughts!

Is the Easter Bunny bad? At what point does it become a distraction from the death and resurrection of Christ? Are there any ways we can use the Easter Bunny to lead to a conversation about Jesus? How can we keep our focus on the TRUE meaning of Easter?

  1. The Easter Bunny is not bad, per say, but that it exists is bad because it gives false meaning to Easter. However, it was a tool that was used to evangelize, by converting pagan holidays (like the winter solstice and Christmas, I think). But is that compromising use of a tool right? I don't think so, because it distracts in the long run and likens pagan-ness to Christianity. As always, discussion of this can lead to the "true meaning of Easter" talk though, and we can talk about our beliefs and what we really know the meaning of Easter is.

And we should always spread the gospel like the bunny (or bilby, which is way better) spreads eggs. Kind of. Not really.

  2. The Bunny is just a cute and fluffy creature that symbolizes innocence, however a bunny cann't lay eggs so we should have and Easter chicken. (egg symbolizes new life if your wondering)

  4. I just looked it up... the bunny that clucks like a chicken?

I think we should have an Easter chilby... like a chicken bilby hybrid... I have no idea what that would look like though. And I guess that the Easter bunny gives us a segway to tell people the real meaning of Easter, so... maybe it isn't bad. In contrast with like Yom Kippur, which only Jewish people celebrate, most people seem to celebrate Easter (and may actually go to church that one day) but may not celebrate it for the real reason... and I don't know which is worse.
